| Plot Summary of Isolde, Queen of the Western Isle |
"The first of the Tristan and Isolde novels by Rosalind Miles. A retelling of the legendary Authurian love story of Sir Tristan of Lyonesse and Princess Isolde of Ireland. The Queen of Ireland (Isolde's mother) and Sir Marhaus (her lover) plan to take Cornwall from its ruler King Mark by force. Isolde, a healer and not a warrior, advises her mother not to challenge King Mark and to preserve peace between their two lands. Nevertheless, the Queen ignores Isolde's warnings and goes through with her plan sending Marhaus to challenge Mark. Mark is a weak king and a poor fighter, so he must have a champion to protect his lands. So Merlin sends for Sir Tristan of Lyonesse (Mark's nephew) to be his champion. Marhaus and Tristan battle, and Marhuas is mortally wounded and later dies. But, Tristan himself is wounded by a poison dagger. The poison is spreading fast, so in order to save Tristan's life Merlin puts him on a ship and sends him to Ireland to be healed by Isolde. Isolde heals Tristan and they become fast friends. "
