Plot Summary of Ancient Egyptian Literature, Vol. 2: The New Kingdom
"Published in 1976, this is the second of three volumes of highly regarded new translations of Egyptian literature with notes and commentary. The New Kingdom (Dynasty 18-20; 1550-1080BC), time of the Egyptian empire, produced a greatly increased literary output. The period covers many of the most famous Egyptians, including: Queen Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Akhenaten, Seti I, Rameses II, Merneptah, Tutankhamen, Ay, and General Haremhab. These reigns produced very many inscriptions and papyri, including that of the famous Kadesh Battle; El-Amarna hymns and prayers; the 'Instruction of Amenemope' - the peak of Egyptian instruction texts; the later love poetry; and tales of wonder (short stories) such as 'The Destruction of Mankind', and the contending of 'Truth and Falsehood'. The much discussed 'Israel Stela', otherwise known as the 'Poetical Stela of Merneptah' is covered here. There are indexes covering divinities, kings and queens, personal names, geographical and ethnic terms, Egyptian words, and Major Concepts (ba, dat, ka, maat)."
