Plot Summary of Kirkland Revels
"Catherine and Gabriel met one day and began to see each other quite frequently. When he asked her to marry him, she ignored the warning signs and said yes. Shortly after they are married, he died somewhat mysteriously. Being his wife, she became entangled in the mystery, not trusting anyone in his family. She formed a friendship with her late husband's cousin, Simon. She didn't fully trust Simon but she realized she didn't have a choice."
Laura J. Miller, Resident Scholar

"Catherine marries Gabriel - not out of love but more because she feels protective about him and also to escape from the gloomy atmosphere of her father's house. They marry without the knowledge of the groom's family and friends. Gabriel dies within four days of their return to Gabriel's stately mansion - Kirkland Revels.

Catherine goes back to her father's house. However, ther she discovers that she is pregnant and returns to Kirkland Revels. After returning there she faces a period of terror where somebody is trying to prove that she is mentally unbalanced. If she can be taken to a mental asylum, then if a male child is born then he can be killed when he is delivered, or the child will be still born due to the shock and ordeal faced by the mother. The villain turns out to be a suave and apparently very gentle doctor who turns out to be an illegitimate son of Sir Mathew, the lord of Kirkland Revels."
