African-American Shirley Ferris Mills remains grieving the death of her beloved spouse, who died for his country in the Gulf. She decides she and her two preadolescent children need escape from the haunting memories of their current life and to simply start over. She leaves Huntsville, Alabama to drive to the Davis area of California.
Along the way, the police stop her believing she may have stolen her car. When that is cleared up and she is freed, Shirley is about to continue her journey when a white teen Windi, with whom she shared a cell, asks for a ride to Tyler, Texas. Shirley agrees though she was not planning to go to Tyler despite her beloved Mother Johnson living there. In Tyler, as she heals through embracing the Lord and the love of Mother Johnson, Shirley meets her high school prom beau Tony Taylor.
