"Emperor Louis Napoleon seized power in France in 1848 and ruled until 1870. His reign was one of the most exciting and glamorous periods in French history when art, music, literature, fashion, and finance flourished. Louis was not noted for his intellectual abilities, but he possessed the political skills of a modern politician. He maintained France's position as a world power, led the country through several wars, and directed the beautification of Paris. His sex life was the scandal of Europe and set the tone for the sexual freedom which France became known for. This is a very readable biography of the Emperor and will introduce the reader to the personalities and political events during this fascinating period of French history."
