| Plot Summary of Memoir of a Visionary: Antonia Pantoja |
"This is the struggle of a child from a poor Puerto Rican family in the Island to educate herself, develop her sense of purpose and public responsibility , leadership skills and ethics to become one of the most outstanding Puerto Rican leaders. IT is the struggle of her political consciousness and leadership to become the creator of many major Puerto Rican institutions to improve the conditions of others and to advance the civil rights of Puerto Ricans in the United States. Her struggle from poverty and her actions in behalf of others enabled her to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her accomplishments in behalf of education and Puerto Rican youth. She was the first Hispanic woman to receive this award in 1996. Dr. Pantoja died at the age of 80 . Her book was released just weeks before her death."
Dr. Wilhelmina Perry, Resident Scholar
