"SOLO FACES by JAMES SALTER [1979, 220 pages]
This novel is story of protagonist Vern Rand, an extraordinary rock climber, a hero, a wanderer and a legend. The story starts out with Rand in California where he is laying low. One day, he hears the siren call of the big mountains and moves to the mountain town of Chamonix, France. He scales one face after another, makes some daring rescues and his status as a legend grows. Rand also has to deal with relationships and women, which he does in his own way. This book is a classic, written in Slater's unique style. The style has been called pure as well as Impressionistic. James Slater was named the State Author for New York from 1998-2000. -- R Prasad
