Plot Summary of The Floating Brothel
"The history of the prison ship "The Lady Julian" bringing women convicts to Sydney, Australia towards the end of the 18th century. The men they mated with and the children they produced. An amusing book in its explanation of the crimes for which these women were imprisoned, and the sailors who mated with them. Some tradgedy in the more innoccent cases, but certainly a feeling that the prisoners on board ship were pretty capable of looking after themselves. "
Janet Gratton, Resident Scholar
