"Tirell is a Prince whose father is forcing to marry against his will. The first part of the story is told from the point of view of his younger brother Frain as the two of them run away from their father. They journey over "the wall" to Acheron where they encounter the beautiful and mystical Shamarra and the Black beast. Tirell vows revenge on his father for killing his love and the second part of the book is told from the viewpoint of his ally Fraban of Vaire as they build up a force and ellude Tirell's father's troops. The final part of the book is told from Tirell's point of view and includes the battle with his fathers troops and the aftermath in which his brother Frain's healing powers are fully revealed as is his true father."
