| Plot Summary of Dark Inheritance |
"Susannah Button's father died. His last words to her were "Landeric" then "Forgive me." She wondered about that in the many years to come. Why would her father use his last bit of strength to say that hated name to her? She discovered after his death that she would have to find employment. Where better to look than at the wealthy Landeric estate? There she received a position as governess to the youngest Dewaine girl, Hester. The son and heir to the Landeric estate, Mark Dewaine, didn't want her there. Susannah had no idea why. When things progressed from bad to worse, Mark sent Susannah to Venice for her own safety. While she was there, acting as companion to his aunt, she realized that she had fallen in love with him. When Mark wrote her a letter telling her to come home immediately, she believed he was going to ask her to marry him. When she returned home, she went to see an old friend before she went to talk to Mark. From that friend, Susannah learned a horrible secret that destroyed her chance at happiness with Mark and led her to make some wrong descisions in the years to come. She had no idea about all the secrets and misunderstandings that surrounded her. Despite her new found knowledge, she continued to love Mark, always wondering if he ever thought of her."
