Coronation
A working class family decide to give up their annual holiday, and instead travel to London to see the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The book is the story of the events of the day, and the reactions of the various members of the family to those events. It is beautifully written, and is my favourite Paul Gallico story....
Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Moscow
English journalist Geoffrey Lockwood fell in love with a young Intourist guide in Russia while traveling the Soviet Union for a critical book in the early 1970s. He can't get back to her, or even get word to her. In her fourth adventure, Lockwood's cleaning lady Ada Harris goes to Moscow with the harebrained idea of bringing the lovely girl back to London. Of course Mrs. Harris takes her friend Violet Butterfield, but the two old ladies quickly run afo...
Mrs. 'Arris Goes to New York
In her second big adventure, Mrs. Harris the London cleaning lady decides to rescue the 8-year-old boy next door. He is the son of a GI and an English girl who parted, now mistreated by the large English family who took him in. Mrs. Harris hopes to spirit the kid to America and find his rightful father. She takes her fearful, boisterous friend Violet Butterfield, and has many amazing encounters with the French ambassador, a Rolls Royce driver, a hillbill...

This one concerns a London char (a working class woman who cleans other people's houses), who sets her heart on owni...

The Man Who Was Magic
It is a CRIME that this wonderful, magical book is long out of print and VERY hard to find. A young man makes his way with his talking dog to the city of magicians, where he hopes to learn the tricks of the trade and join the magicians guild. Unfortunately, it gradually becomes apparent that while he indeed has the magic touch, the magicians are all merely prestidigitators, tricksters, and illusionists. Their suspicious and increasingly fearful response ...
The Small Miracle
Pepino is a 10-year-old orphan in the Italian town of Assisi. His only family and "legacy" is a donkey named Violetta with a Mona Lisa smile. They make a living together by transporting goods for people. But one day Violetta falls very ill, and ceases to smile. Pepino is desperate, and wishes to take Violetta to the crypt of St. Francis, who loved all living things, in the lower church of the Basilica, and pray to him. But Fra Bernard, the lay Supervisor...
The Snow Goose
In a remote corner of England, Philip Rhayader has established a remote home for himself. In his sanctuary, he is free from the society that taunts or pities him for his misshapen form. He stays by his lighthouse and paints birds, eventually developing a type of bird sanctuary on his land. One November day, a young girl, Frith, arrives at the lighthouse with an injured Canadian snow goose in her arms. Philip cares for the goose, and the girl visits t...
