The Monk
Ambrosio, the title character of Lewis' The Monk, begins as a renowned clergyman. He discovers that one of the novice monks is really a beautiful woman, Matilda, and she seduces him in the monastary. Ambrosio goes from bad to worse, even enlisting Matilda's help in the rape of a young virgin who has attracted his attentions. Fearful of discovery, he even commits murder.
