| Plot Summary of Death Minus Zero |
"John Baker is one of those writers that you know from the first book, if there is any justice in the literary world, will be widely acclaimed by both fans and critics. His writing style draws the reader into the book from the first page and his stories and characters linger in the mind for days after the book is finished.
The first book in the Sam Turner series is POET IN THE GUTTER. It introduces the reader to one of the most refreshing private investigators in crime fiction. Sam is fifty-ish, a reformed alcoholic with an uncomplicated view of the world. He is a kind man, but tough when the situation warrants. Unmarried, his “family” is made up of his assistants, all great characters in their own rights.
In this second outing, a mentally unbalanced inmate named Norman Brown has escaped from prison. On arriving in York, he hires Sam's agency to find a woman from his past he calls Snow White. Although Sam can tell the man is somehow dodgy, the agency is short on cash flow, and so Sam takes the case. Norman settles down living with a dim bulb of a girl named Janet who has a crush on John Lennon. But Norman is like a cat among pigeons and soon there are unexplained murders. At about the same time, Sam and company begins shadowing Norman and Norman begins to suspect they know he's a monster.
This book is very different in style from the first in the series but it is still is just as absorbing. Baker's writing flows like a river of words making his books hard to put down. Treat yourself to this series, you'll be glad you did."
