Mysterious, Oct 2001, 24.95, 310 pp.
ISBN: 0892966661
Love had dragged now sixty years old Milo Milodragovich from his Montana home to Texas five years ago, but his relationship with Betty seems ready to tank as he is bored. Milo has invested in the upscale motel of Betty's Uncle Travis Lee and actually runs the related Low Water Crossing Bar and Grill on the Gatlin County line. However, his efforts at becoming a businessman leaves Milo filled with ennui and he returns to his previous work obtaining a Texas private investigative license.
While tracking down a missing woman, Milo watches a black male tear up a roadhouse and kill a drug dealer. Unable to resist, he begins to ask questions about Enos Walker only to become a target of people who want to silence his inquiries. The attempts on his life further fuel Milo's need to know and soon he evades bullets in Texas, Vegas, and Montana even if the aging bones do not quite dodge as quickly as they used to.
THE FINAL COUNTRY is a fantastic private investigative tale that is loaded with numerous twists and turns, which somehow tie back into a taut story line. Milo remains the same irascible and irreverent individual that has starred in several other novels by James Crumley though he is showing his age more and more. The powerful plot is one of the author's best works ever, which says a lot because Mr. Crumley has quite a biography as one of the genre's best over the last twenty-five years.
