Plot Summary of Heart of Darkness
"Psychological study of characters in social/racial upheaval (internal) and its effects on their understanding of society, themselves, race and the world."
Kelly Whiting, Resident Scholar

"In Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Marlowe tells his tale of his journey to the heart of Africa, the Congo. His purpose is to get ivory with his steamboat, but becomes a journey into the deep psyche of the human mind. "
Amanda Van Laarhoven, Resident Scholar

"Marlow tells his companions the story of his adventures in Africa. He is hired by a European company to be the captain of a steamer to pilot the boat through the rivers to reach the different stations. The company's pretext is to spread knowledge through Africa, but they are there to make money, particularly from ivory.

Their travels through Africa are made when Africa was at its roughest, with cannibals still a danger.

Marlow hears about a man called Kurtz, the company's best agent in Africa, held in high regard by all. When Marlow meets this man we see how he has been corrupted by his greed.

"

John Samson, Resident Scholar
