"After unexplainable lapses in time and the sudden onset of autophobia, Marty and Dusty come to realize that they are puppets in a scheme to settle a score over twenty years in the past. They discover the puppeteer is a person close to them and put together the pieces of a puzzle that could end their lives. This is basically a re-hash of the ealier novel "Night Chills". They both revolve around 'brain-washing' and controlling people's subconcious."

"Martie Rhodes takes her friend Susan to a reknown pyschiatrist, Dr. Acriman. Soon Martie is having mental problems herself. As the book progresses, it starts to look less like mental illness and more like mind control and manipulation, which reaches far beyond Martie and Susan. Martie and her husband Dusty attempt to find out who is abusing them. When they do know who, they must find evidence that the police accept, as well as try to understand WHY. All they while, the powers that are attempting to control them try to stop them."

The doctor (antagonist )actually uses his knowledge of mental health to worsen the condition of the victims to the point they are suicidal and manipulates the women for sexual purposes, but he starts getting sloppy and is eventually revealed."

Marty began to have delusional thoughts, bizarre behavior, and severe anxiety attacks. She began to see Susan's doctor for help. She trusted him because she thought her friend's treatment was working, until she was found dead in her apartment."

"Martie is extremely happy and content with her life until one day she becomes afraid of her own shadow. Having a friend who is agrophobic and relies upon her support entirely, she tries to shrug off her fear. Her phobia increases to an extent whereupon she destroys everything in the house in her bid to expel any object she may be able to use to harm her beloved husband, Dusty - or herself.
Her husband suggests she see the same phychiatrist she takes her friend to, Dr. Ahriman.
Dusty has already taken his brother, Skeet to a care home for Drug addicts following a suicide attempt earlier in the day. Skeet went into a deep sleep upon Dusty's instructions.
Martie's friend is found dead in her apartment leaving a suicide note; however a message left on Marties answerphone quickly discounts such an end - and implies the murderer is none other than Dr Ahriman. A meeting with their own consultant, Dr.Closterman sends them on a bizarre trail to find out who is exactly behind the now evident 'brain-washing' with a race against time before they become the next victims."
