| Plot Summary of An Imaginary Life |
"The story of the Roman poet Ovid's exile to distant wastelands and his encounter with a wild boy who has been brought up by deer. Ovid befriends the boy and brings him back to his village to care for him. However when the Child gets ill and then recovers the people of the village fear that his wild woodland spirit has entered another child and made him ill. Ovid flees with the Child further into the harsh frozen wastelands. A tale of harsh survival amongst a beautifully imagined landscape. Malouf depicts a simple people ruled by their environment, a warm brotherhood besieged by demons. He renders brilliantly his description of the wild Child and his efforts to survive. A remarkable feat of the imagination from this prize winning Australian writer."
