In 1458 France, Sir Bearnard captures Avery Murray and her thirteen year old cousin Gillyanne during a raid. Bearnard uses both women to pay off a dice debt he owes mercenary Sir Cameron MacAlpin. To Cameron nothing could be sweeter than Avery because she is the sister of Payton, the man who allegedly raped his sibling. Cameron heads back to the Highlands planning to use Avery as a pawn to obtain the truth.
However, Cameron's perfect plan turns out to have a flaw as he finds himself very attracted to his hostage. To her chagrin, Avery returns his feelings. As they fall in love, the specter of what really happened between Payton and his sister hangs over the area like a shroud. The clan honor for avenging the heinous crime of rape needs to be addressed without hurting Avery.
Hannah Howell's latest Highland romance is an amusing yet serious historical romance. The story line centers on different types of relationships, which include that of the lead couple and those within and between clans. Fifteenth century Scotland comes alive through the antics of feisty but pint-sized Avery and the reactions of the angry HIGHLAND KNIGHT Cameron to her actions.
