"Jack Ryan rescues members of the Royal Family from an assasination attempt in London, and now one of the would-be killers wants revenge for his brother's death...and Jack and his family are the targets...a chilling game of cat-and-mouse, and this time the bad guys just might win..."

"Although not the first published, but the first chronologically of Tom Clancy's series of Jack Ryan novels. The story begins with Ryan and his wife and daughter in London on a working vacation.Ryan happens upon an IRA terrorist attempt on the car driving the Prince of Wales and his wife (Diana ?).He thwarts the attempt, suffering grave injury, and recovers to testify in the trial of one of the terrorists, who escapes while being transported to prison. The remainder of the story follows the escaped terrorist's plot for revenge on Ryan, ending with a full scale assault on Ryan's home by terrorists while Ryan is entertaining the Prince Of Wales and his wife! All of Ryan's family are targeted by the terrorists and injured to varying degrees prior to the finale.
High adventure throughout with righteous violence and cold anger as well as heroism prevailing.Tightly written."

John Juergens, Resident Scholar

"Dr. Ryan was on holiday in London with his family when he was caught in the middle of a terrorist attack upon the Prince of Wales. His instincts took over and Ryan used his Marine officer skills to thwart the attack, killing at least one of the terrorists. Miller, the terrorist who was captured and interrogated by British intelligence, faced Ryan at his trial. When Miller escaped the custody of British authorities while being transferred to a high security prison, those eyes of Miller's haunted Dr. Ryan. And for good reason. Miller swore he'd kill Ryan for destroying his perfect plan for kidnapping the Prince and Princess of Wales. Ryan joins the CIA in order to protect he and his family, trying to find out where Miller would strike next. It's a game of chess that's unfolding between two clever opponents: Ryan and Miller...with their American, British, and Irish counterparts or accomplices. "
F. Scott Sinclair, Resident Scholar

In the end of the book the royal family comes to the U.S. and visits the Ryan's. While they are at the Ryan's house the terrorists attack and get past the defenses around Ryan's house, Ryan and his company wage a guerilla war against the terrorists, and escape by sea, but the terrorists follow.
