Attending a trashy but in party hosted by a magazine, the thirtyish artist is shocked by her reaction the first time ever she sees jazz club owner Joseph Pendleton. Albeit the African-American is quite a handsome hunk, but the stunner to the artist is she feels attracted to him. She has never found a man appealing like this.
Though divorced once and married twice with children from both relationships, Joseph is also instantly attracted to the narrator and the duo share a glorious night together. However, one month later the artist realizes she is pregnant. Undecided whether to keep or abort the baby and not expecting anything from Joseph who she still desires, the artist weighs the future of herself and her unborn.
BAD TIMING is a modern day urban romance that centers on a self-described loser who finds love with a man already overly committed in relationships. The story line is well written, but fails to explore deep enough any pertinent issues because there are several involved. It also fails to connect the reader to the nameless narrator telling her story. Instead, the audience will understand Joseph and his motives a lot better. Debut author Betsy Berne needs to select one issue so that her fans will devour an entire gourmet meal rather than a buffet.
