| Plot Summary of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien |
"It breaks my heart to say it, but Tolkien was an even better and more interesting a letter writer than CS Lewis (they were long time friends). The editors (H. Carpenter and Christopher Tolkien) know what we want in a book like this, and start us off with a letter or two to his wife in 1914. We rapidly progress to the 1937-73 period with lots of discussion of his fiction. Marvellous insights into the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion, Farmer Giles, etc. Get it from the horse's mouth - I once reviewed a book on Tolkien by throwing it in the fire - at least the twaddle kept me warm for five minutes."
Michael JR Jose, Resident Scholar
