Plot Summary of On the Way to the Wedding
"The story begins with Gregory Bridgerton, the seventh of eight children, attending his sister in-law's, Kate, house party in the country. Gregory is searching for true love, and thinks he has found it in the beautiful Hermione Watson. Miss Watson's heart is engaged elsewhere, however. Hermione's best friend, Lady Lucinda Abernathy, believes that Gregory would be the best match for Hermione, and attempts to steer Hermione in his direction.
Lucy's attempts at matchmaking are undone when Hermione is caught in a scandalous position with Lucy's own brother, Richard, and he and Hermione are forced to marry. Gregory is surprisingly calm about the fast engagement, and does not realize why, until he discovers that perhaps the feelings of desparation for Hermione were not true love.
Lucy comes to realize that during the house party, she fell in love with Gregory. Unfortunately, there is nothing she is able to do about it, because she is "practically engaged". At a ball given by Gregory's mother only a few days before Lucy's wedding, Greogy realizes that he loves Lucy. When he finds out she is getting married in a few days (and to who), he successfully persuades Lucy to run away with him so they can marry.
Their plans are foiled, however, when Lucy tells her guardian, her uncle Robert, that she will be marrying Gregory Bridgerton instead of Lord Haselby. Her Uncle Robert discloses to her that he is being blackmailed by the father of the supposed-to-be groom, and she has no other choice but to marry Lord Haselby. Gregory realizes he cannot let Lucy marry anyone but him On the Way to the Wedding."
