A storm blows Ragnor's ship off course and they take refuge on Hawkfell Island where Chessa convinces everyone that she want to marry Cleve. After much discussion she is wedded to Cleve and Ragnor is sent away.

When he learns that Chessa is the daughter of Hormonze he plots to have her. Cleve now finds that he must rescue his wife from the clutches of his father.
How is it that Cleve set out to arrange a marriage only to find himself married to the bride? Why is Chessa so popular as a prospective bride to so many leaders of the day? Why is Ragnor of York such a bumbling fool? How can a woman be pregnant so many times and still be a virgin? "
