"Caroline Hargreaves is 26 years old , a spinster in London society's thinking. She is surprised when Lord Drake proposes to her a sham engagement. She has disliked Lord Drake for he appears to be always inebriated and he loves to gamble and chase skirts. What consternates her most is that he drags her younger brother along with him. Although her brother Cade is 24 years old, Caroline still feel responsible towards him. But her brother loves Drake and emulates all his actions while Drake does nothing to stop him. So when Drake proposes to her a contract engagement, she is not convinced even when he tells her that he needs the charade to convince his dying father to not disinherit him. Drake's father has disinherited him because he has been a constant disappointment to his father with his immorality and irresponsible ways. He needs Caroline to convince his father that he has changed his ways by courting a proper lady. He tells Caroline that in exchange for her cooperation he will leave her brother alone and he will pay off her brother's heavy gambling debts. Caroline agrees for the sake of her brother. Drake finds himself anticipating the engagement for he has just realized Caroline's beauty and intelligence. During their pretend engagement, Caroline sees a remarkable transformation in Drake. Gone is his air of insobriety and unkempt appearance to be replaced with a distinguished and handsome look. He becomes serious also with his responsibilities in his father's estate which make her think that Drake is more than a drunkard or gambler. Their time spent together, both Caroline and Drake fight off the temptation and their growing feelings for each. The farce convinces Drake's father and after his father died, he inherits all the earl's assets and fortune. After his father's death, Caroline has not heard anything or seen Drake anymore and she is only surprised to learn of his return to debauchery and drinking and most importantly his impending wedding to another woman. Caroline is hurt and humiliated for she has fallen in love with Drake during their time together. Cade is furious with Drake for hurting his sister so he kidnaps Drake and presents it as a Christmas present to her sister. With Drake tied to the bed, Caroline confesses her love for him and seduces him. Drake who has been fighting his feelings for Caroline for so long finally succumb to her love. But Drake is still tied to his engagement to the other woman telling Caroline that the woman's family has blackmailed him into the engagement.
