Plot Summary of Saving Graces
"These are the memoirs of Elizabeth Anania Edwards, who became famous when her husband, John, was the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2004.

The daughter of a Navy pilot, who spent part of her childhood in Japan, Elizabeth Anania was in law school when she met John Edwards. They married right after she took her bar exam.

Elizabeth had a very successful career of her own as a bankruptcy attorney and a professor at a law school. Her life changed very abruptly in 1996. By that point, the couple had two children, a son named Wade and a daughter named Cate. After Wade was killed in a car wreck at the age of 14, Elizabeth quit her job. After their grief had begun to abate a little bit, she and John started a computer learning center in his memory. Eventually, they also went on to have two more children. Elizabeth gave birth to their daughter Emma at age 48 and son Jack at 50!

John Edwards was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998. Elizabeth moved their family to Washington. She has always been one of her husband's closest confidantes. Although hardly a woman of high fashion, she had to become accustomed to being in the limelight when John Kerry asked him to join the Democratic ticket in 2004.

One big focus of this book is an event that took place in 2004, which Americans would not learn about for quite a while. In the final days before the election, Elizabeth found a lump in her brest. It was ironic - throughout the campaign she had talked many times about women's health issues but she herself had neglected to get a mammogram. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, but the family kept the story to themselves and she delayed treatment until after the election.
