| Plot Summary of Ashes in the Wind |
"Alaina McGaren is a young woman on the run. Her home and the surrounding area has been devestated by war, and her family has been touched greatly by it. After the death of her brother, father and mother, Alaina tries to help those who fight against the invading yankees, offering shelter and food to the rebels. A soldier, gravelly wounded and unable to continue, begs Alaina to deliver a message to his commander, and after agreeing to this, Alaina is branded a spy by those she had once called friend.
Alone and in much danger, Alaina takes on the appearance of a young boy, naming herself Al, and journeys to New Orleans where her aunt and uncle reside with their daughter. When a handsome surgeon, Cole Latimer, saves the young boy 'Al' from a group of ruffians, Alaina is forced to carry on the charade and agrees to work at the hospital as a cleaning-boy.
On a night of disasters, Alaina and Cole spend a passionate evening together, but in the morning he can recall nothing of the event, and Roberta, Alaina's cousin, claims that it was she who spent the night in Cole's arms. Broken-hearted, and forced to remain silent by the threat of discovery, Alaina can say nothing about what truly happened that night. But Cole has not completely forgotten the form he made love to that night, and visions of a woman other than Roberta occupy his thoughts."
