Plot Summary of Scandal in Spring
"Daisy Bowman has always been a cause of exasperation and annoyance to her father, Thomas Bowman. With her unconventional behavior such as playing men's sports, reading books, and unrestrained way of expressing her thoughts, it's no wonder that in conventional London society no man has proposed to her. Believing that Daisy won't ever make a catch, he decides to give her an ultimatum: to find a man to marry in 2 months or marry Matthew Swift. Daisy is enraged that her father is selling her off to Matthew who has always been her father's right-hand man. Although having not seeing him for years, she thought the worst of him – an ambitious bag-of-bones who wish to secure himself a permanent position in her father's company.
With her sister and friends' husbands they vacation to Stony Cross Park where her sister's husband, Marcus, arranges for her to meet with London's eligible bachelors. Upon arriving there she is surprised to discover a new image of Matthew Swift. Gone is his bony stature and is now replaced with a muscular built that she finds appealing. Remembering her father's plot she antagonizes Matthew even when he claims that he has no part in her father's arrangement and he has no wish of marrying her. But as they often find themselves together in the estate, Daisy reverses her opinion of him. She believes that Matthew is not ambitious, calculated and cold-hearted like his father. She finds that Matthew possesses kindness, dependability, and scruples. She is also surprised to discover that they can share an intense and passionate kiss, which only he can bring out of her. As they spend more time together, she firmly believes that Matthew is the man for her and wants to marry him.
Matthew has been a de facto son for Thomas Bowman. Under Thomas tutelage, he is able to expand the Bowman's soap making industry. He also experiences familial companionship for Thomas treats him like a son and invites him to family dinner. In those dinners, he secretly yearns for Daisy who delights him with her honest and caring heart. When he finds out later that Thomas has arranged for him to marry Daisy, he is both ecstatic and tormented. He wants to marry Daisy for he has been in love with her for years but a secret past may lead her to ruin and so he avoids Daisy. However Daisy is determined to have him or no one at all. After compromising her, he knows that he cannot turn his back on Daisy and finally he begins to hope for a happy life with her. But the past comes back to haunt him and it reveals him to be a convicted thief. Knowing that all is over for him, he is surprised and overwhelmed to discover that nobody believes that he is a thief other than his accuser. With Daisy and her family's support, Matthew settles the past once and for all and fights back have a life with Daisy.
