Plot Summary of The Walled Garden
"Beth is driving to her parental home, to be with her family as her mother, Alice, is dying. Beth has not had an easy relationship with her mother, and this particular homecoming is very difficult. Her mother has had a stroke and cannot speak. But as Beth is sitting at her mother's bedside, her mother says one word - 'letters'. Beth is able to interpret that this is something very significant and is able to find a stack of letters that Alice has written to her when she knew she was going to die. The book actually flashes back to the thoughts and feelings going through Alice's mind as she is writing these letters. Reading these letters allows Beth to better understand her mother and herself. Alice is seeking reconciliation through these letters and Beth is able to forgive her and actually be at peace with her mother's death."
