"Emily is a young farm girl on an island named Serein. A young man from the distant future is magically placed in her village by Meridian, a man who can control the threads of time to a limited extent. The young man and Emily meet at a dance and fall in love. They then, go on a walk and consummmate their marriage. Emily invites the young man to her birthday the next day. When he doesn't show up, she feels betrayed, but really Meridian had moved him back to his real time, where the young man searches to find a way to see her again.
Emily runs away from home and becomes first a prostitute, and then Rhapsody, a Singer who can heal through her songs. When a powerful man who remembers what she was like as a prostitute wants her, she runs away again this time trying to escape the mans allies, and mercenaries. While running through the streets, she runs into The Brother, an assassin who never misses his mark, and his best friend, a giant firbolg. She adopts them and inadvertly changes the Brother's name in the process. They escape, and the two men take her with them to travel the earth for hundreds of years.
When they again see light they are changed, each with a power over one of the elements. They find themselves on the other side of the world, in a time a thousand years after their own, where people speak a language much changed from their own.
