| Plot Summary of Happiness Sold Separately |
"Elinor Mackey was a professional woman who put off having a husband and family until well into her thirties going with the belief there will always be time later in life. Once she was happily married to Ted, they decided to start a family but their plans did not turn out like they hoped.
Elinor and Ted have tried for a couple of years to have a baby to no avail and the stress and strain has literally pulled these two people who love each other apart.
Elinor has sheltered herself away from Ted and lives in her own secluded world in the laundry room. Not wanting to be touched or consoled Ted is left on his own. Feeling his own pain and not being able to share it with his wife he found solace in the arms of another woman even though he still loved Elinor.
When Elinor finds out about the affair she confronts his lover and him together and then leaves Ted. The rest of the book is the story about them trying to find a way back to each other.
