Emma appears to have been beaten up and her father is unreasonable demanding Casey to take her daughter. Casey, being honorable, accepts the obligation and promises to protect Emma from his abusive father. When the chaos has died down, Emma reveals that she has lied being pregnant that she just wants to get away from their house and go away to someplace far from Buckhorn, Kentucky . Even knowing the truth Casey still wants to take care of Emma. Emma however has other plans. Although she loves Casey she doesn't want his pity. The following day Emma ran away and Casey is worried about her. But Emma appears to have disappeared. 8 years later, Emma returns to Buckhorn to visit her ailing father. She meets up with Casey and her feelings for him never change but this time she's out to prove to Casey that she's not a charity case. Casey has been devastated when Emma disappeared 8 years ago. He often thinks of her and worries about her. Now that she has returned, Casey's feelings bloom into love. This time he won't make the mistake of leaving her out of his sight. He accompanies her to the hospital to visit her father, tours her around the town's lake and takes her to his family for dinner. He also finds out how Emma has survived the past 8 years. He discovers that it has been her alcoholic mother who has driven her away that fateful night 8 years ago and that her father just wants to protect her. Emma gets into a relationship with Casey however she knows that she'll return back to Chicago soon for she is convinced that she doesn't belong in the town and has never really belonged. She thinks that she's better off in Chicago where she can take her parents with her while running a small business. But Casey is out to prove her that they belong together.
