"Young widow Cate Nightingale has moved to a small town in Idaho to raise her twin boys. She has a small bed and breakfast, and is friendly with everyone in town, including shy Cal Harris, whom everyone knows loves Cate. Everything is normal until a guest disappears out the window. A few days later, two armed men take Cate and her friend by gunpoint and force them to give them the guest's belongings. Cal suddenly appears with a shotgun and chases the men away.
The men are trying to find the financial records of a mob boss in Chicago. When they realize Cate didn't give them all of her guest's belongings, one suggests they take the entire small town hostage. With the help of some disreputable locals, they cut off all lines of communication and begin shooting at everything that moves.
While the men were still plotting, Cate had begun to notice Cal as a man, not just her shy handy man, especially now that she has sent the twins away out of fear. When the shooting begins, Cate and Cal find each other and organize the town, helping them find shelter and bring in the dead.
Cate and Cal are the youngest and healthiest people left in the town, and both are experienced rock climbers. They decide to leave town that way since the men holding them hostage wouldn't expect it. While camped out to weather a storm along the way, they admit they have come to love each other and finally make love.
The snow becomes too deep, and Cal sends Cate back to town. When he knows she is gone he circles back to town, usings his Special Forces training to track the men who are attacking the town. He kills them, and then witnesses the original hired killers attack and kill each other. When Cal is sure it is safe, the townspeople are able to leave and find help. After the police have taken everyone's statements, Cate and Cal leave to pick up the twins and begin their life together."
