After her two sisters determine that Miranda is the most likely to snag a rich husband, Miranda sets sail to London, accompanied by an Lady Overstreet, a female chaperone/matchmaker who will assist the beautiful young women in acquiring a young, wealthy and eligible husband among the ton. Although Miranda is reluctant to marry for anything other than love, she realizes that she cannot disappoint her sisters and ruin their hopes and dreams. En route to London, Miranda receives the shock of her life when the boat docks in a island locale and she comes face to face with seacaptain, Alex Haddon, her first and only love. Miranda has no idea that Alex is now an immensely wealthy man.
Alex can't stand the sight of Miranda, who he believes betrayed their love and left him for near dead after a brutal beating. As a half Indian/half White living in the States, Alex was brutalized and marginalized all of his young life. Alex cannot help but think that Miranda refused to run away with him all those years ago due to his Indian heritage. Sparks fly between Alex and Miranda, despite both of their attempts to deny the raging attraction. Tormented by the nearness of the woman he loves, Alex kidnaps Miranda and sets sail for London. Alex seduces the virginal Miranda, who becomes desperately ill on the voyage. When Alex overhears jibberish Miranda is saying while in a delirious state, he mistakenly believes that she is yet again opposed to him due to his heritage and dark skin. Upon reaching London, Alex dumps Miranda at the doorstep of his wealthy blood brother and his wife, choosing to set sail on the wide open seas in order to nurse his broken heart.
Upon recovering from her illness and discovering that she has been jilted by Alex, Miranda vows that she will marry a rich and powerful man and become the toast of the London season. As Miranda takes London by storm, Alex returns to England with the hopes of winning back the love of a lifetime."
