|Plot Summary of Track of the Cat |
TRACK OF THE CAT was directed by William A. Wellman in 1954.
The Bridges family lives in an isolated ranch in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Pa Bridges, who became an alcoholic, does not have any more his word to say in the family decisions. Consequently, it's Ma Bridges, with her son Curt, who manage the family. The elder son, Arthur, tries to moderate the dominating character of Curt and the youngest, Harold, to reconcile his love for Gwen Williams, who's currently paying him a visit at the ranch, with the hatred his mother feels for the young woman.
The first snow of the winter is falling and a panther attacked the herd of cows. Curt and Arthur leave the ranch to drive out this dangerous animal which creeps up soon on Arthur and kills him. Curt decides to hunt down alone the panther and returns the body of his brother to the ranch with his horse. During three days, Curt will track the dangerous cat but, without food and means of lighting a fire, Curt is soon lost in the snow-covered vastnesses of Colorado.
During this time, with the death of Arthur, the tensions worsened in the ranch. Gwen Williams hopelessly tries to push Harold to face his mother and to brave her: she hopes that her husband-to-be will have enough pluck to tell his Ma that he wants to leave the ranch and marry her. But Ma Bridges uses of all the means at her disposal to make Harold feel guilty and to make him give up his project.
