Plot Summary of Dope Run
"In the sun-drenched world of south Florida, drug smuggling has taken root in a big way. While it's not easy money—what with the threat of double-crossing partners, serious jail time, and death—just a few successful runs can make a man's fortune. That's precisely
why Joel Sartorius has developed a partnership with Donnie Troisano; together they plan to smuggle a load of Columbian marijuana and cocaine into the U.S.

DEA agent Mark Wyatt knows better than anyone just how often a drug bust is pure luck. When he spots Sartorius's boat, Smuggler's Toy, he has a feeling that something is afoot. By sharing information with other Florida agencies, he sets in motion an investigation that will move from the sunny shores of southern Florida to Bogata, Columbia, to tiny Athell, Georgia.

Dope Run is an enjoyable novel that straddles the line between thriller and police procedural. The smugglers are smart enough and the plot complicated enough to provide moments of great tension. When an equipment failure forces the smugglers to use a contingency plan, parts of their scheme begin to fall inexorably apart, resulting in a highspeed boat chase and shootout with U.S. Customs.

The story moves among locations at a dizzying pace, revealing information in short, staccato bursts. One of the pleasures of Dope Run lies in watching the authorities make the best of several bits of luck, carefully locking each new piece of information into the picture they are building of the crime.
