On a voyage aboard the Normandie, Nick meets Liane De Villiers, wife of the French Ambassador to the U.S. Unhappy with his own marriage, Nick admires the relationship that Liane has with her husband and soon develops a connection with her in which he is able to share his experiences. The two become friends during the Normandie's journey but part ways after they arrive in France.
In spite of the fears from news about Hitler's actions in Europe, both Nick and Liane have plans with their families to remain in France for long periods of time. Within a year of their arrival, tensions in Europe continue to build until England officially declares war. The beginning of World War II leads to both Nick and Liane's secret departure on a fishing boat headed for the U.S.
During their time together on the boat, Nick a Liane are caught up in a passionate love affair. When the voyage is over, they once again part ways knowing that they cannot continue their relationship.
