Plot Summary of The Deception
"Evangeline de Beauchamps is half English and half French and was raised mostly in England. After Napoleon is defeated the first time her father returns with her to France, his native country. One evening there is a break-in and she and her father are kidnapped and taken to Paris. Evangeline is forced into becoming a spy for France to save her father's life. She is sent to the home of Richard Claredon, Duke of Portsmouth, and widower of her cousin. She is sent to him a supposed widow and poor relation. She offers herself to him as nanny to his 5 year old son. The spy ring has sent her to him as his castle sets on cliffs above a beach they want to use to smuggle spies into England. Richard is a widow with a 5 year old son. His offer of marriage to Sabrina Eversleigh several months earlier has now faded into feelings of "It wasn't meant to be" and "Everything happened as it should have". His friend Robbie was murdered by traitors a few months earlier and he is stilling looking for the murderer, vowing revenge. Shortly after Evangeline arrives she discovers that the man who hand picked her for her mission is a close friend of Richard's and a man whom she refused to marry 2 years earlier. He forces to become a check point for the incoming spys, to review their orders and to send them on to London to become part of the war ministry. When Richard's son is threatened with harm and his old nanny is mysteriously murdered, Evangeline memorizes everything she can about the spy ring activities and keeps a journal. Richard and Evangeline fall in love and this complicates the situation to no end as Richard is constantly trying to learn the secrets he knows she is keeping from him and she is overwhelmed with guilt.
