| Plot Summary of Jane of Lantern Hill |
"Jane has always believed her father is dead. She lives in Toronto with her mother and grandmother. She adores her mother, but hates her grandmother. Grandmother is very strict and unfeeling with her, and is jealous of the love Jane and her mother share. Grandmother rules the house, and Mother is too timid to stand up for her, so Jane's life there is miserable. But, one day, a school mate tells Jane that her father isn't dead. Instead, her parents are divorced and he lives on Prince Edward Island. When Jane learns this, she hates him. He couldn't be very good if he left her mother, she thinks. What's worse is, not long after finding out about him, he sends word that he wants her to come visit. It's decided that she better go, so he won't make trouble.
When Jane goes to Prince Edward Island, she's amazed to find that she loves him. She and Dad understand each other perfectly. In Toronto, Jane was shy and awkward, but here, she blossoms and is a brave and resourceful girl. But, not everything is perfect. Aunt Irene -Dad's sister- is always trying to cause trouble by patronizing and making comments about Jane's mother. Also, there is an old friend of Dad's. Her name is Lillian Morrow, and Aunt Irene says they might have gotten married if Jane's mother hadn't come along. Now, Lillian is back. Will Dad marry her? Jane knows that would be a mistake, because he still loves Mother. Now, Jane must find out what really went wrong between her parents so many years ago and try to reunite her family."
