Plot Summary of The Heartbreaker
" Widowed rancher and would be politician Sloan McCord needs a caretaker for his infant daughter and also a lady of good breeding to help him in his campaign for state senate. His heart still belongs to the wife he couldn't protect from murder by his political enemies. It's not that McCord cannot commit, it is that he doesn't want to. He refuses to open himself up to more of the guilt that already consumes him.
Heather Ashford is in desparate straits due to her late father's debts and marries McCord knowing it will be a marriage of convenience and that he thinks she is too delicate and well bred for the hard life of ranching. Sloan does not want to show any disrespect to the memory of his late wife so he pushes Heather away and at times treats her horribly. It is his fear of caring for another woman, and possibly losing her, that keeps his heart closed off, but he cannot resist his attraction to his new wife.
The two struggle against falling in love while Heather surprises her husband as she successfully adapts to ranch life and determinedy sets about bridging the emotional distance her husband tries to maintain while trying to win his love."
