Plot Summary of Footsteps in the Snow
"Twelve-year-old Isobel Scott begins her diary at sea in July 1815, as her family travels from Scotland to Canada, hoping for a better life. Her mother has just died, and Isobel feels lost without her. When they finally reach Canada, a long journey overland to where they will settle still lies ahead. After two months they finally reach their destination, only to be told they must turn back because there are not enough supplies for them to spend the winter there. Isobel continues to describe in her diary her life over the next year as her family suffers many hardships while trying to build their new life. They have to deal with harsh weather, poor living conditions, and not enough food."
