Plot Summary of Dreaming Southern
"Lila Mae Wooten is on a road trip with her four children to meet her husband/their father in California. After getting lost a few times, visiting out-of-the-way people and places, and making new friends, Lila Mae encourages a woman and her son to leave their home and join them on their journey. The seven people drive to California on a route that only the newcomers know. Meanwhile, the children struggle to make sense of Lila Mae's mix of affection and impulsiveness. The group ends up lost at the edge of the Grand Canyon and there the book flash-forwards 30 years to Lila Mae widowed in Los Angeles with alternately doting and distant children.
