" Prince Alexei of Avalonia and Pamela Effingon are drawn together during a masquerade in Venice and end up having a one night stand in which she keeps her identity secret. Four years later, Pamela, who has inherited a townhouse in London and a large inheritance goes home from the scandal she had created six years earlier to find that Prince Alexei is residing in the townhouse she is about to create into home.
Prince Alexei has gone to London to search for a new home after giving up his country to Russians to prevent bloodshed. He plans on settling in the English countryside and rents a townhouse in London until he can find a proper home and funds become available in the Bank of England. After a few short days at his new residence, Pamela arrives with her Aunt and cousin to claim the inheritance. They agree to let him stay in the townhouse with them as long as he agrees to have a pretend bethrothal to Pamela, so she may be successfully launched back into society after her scandal.
Pamela, who is afraid that Alexei will recognize her as his mystery lover, feels the pangs of love for Alexei. He feels a deep attraction for Pamela as well, a begins to wonder if she is indeed the woman he had fallen for years earlier. Their love must navigate the obstacles of her scandal and his shame for his fallen country in order for their fake courtship to become something more."
