| Plot Summary of Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer |
"As a young journalist and avid University of Alabama football enthusiast, the author wheedles his way into an RV with fellow Alabama Crimson Tide fanatics for a road game with Vanderbilt. So begins his personal journey into the sociological mindset of hardcore fans, their camaraderie, and the zealous passion they exhibit for their favorite team. Along the way he falls into the lifestyle of the traveling Crimson Tide tailgaters eventually buying a not-so road worthy RV himself. He experiences the emotional highs and lows of following the Tide through their SEC Conference title season while traveling to the campuses of opposing teams.
The people he befriends along the way are too bizarre to be believed; such as the man who has dedicated himself to breeding and showing pedigreed poultry throughout the country in between attending games in his custom RV, the man on a heart donor waitlist who cannot venture more than 2 hours from his hospital in Tennessee or he will forfeit his spot on the list but routinely travels beyond those parameters, or the couple who skipped their daughters wedding to attend an Alabama home game. St. John cites scientific studies that demonstrate crazy fan behavior is universal from college football to soccer the world over and traces it's roots back to the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome.
