"Oskar Schell is a self-proclaimed "Inventor, Jewelry Designer, Jewelry Fabricator, Amateur Entomologist, Francophile, Vegan, Origamist, Pacifist, Percussionist" and more, at a mere 9 years old.
Oskar is obsessed with solving the mysteries left behind by his father, who has died in the 9/11 attacks. He finds a mysterious key labeled "Black" in his father's closet, and becomes determined to find the lock that it opens. He travels all over the city, trying hundreds of locks and meeting dozens of Blacks, becoming desperate to find what he thinks might be the last message from his beloved father. He meets beatiful women, old men, babies and couples, and yet his search leads him no closer to the answer, but instead turns up more mysteries and secrets about his family and their past.

"This book switches back and forth between a boy named Oskar, who lost him father in the World Trade Center attacks and is trying to find some meaning, and a young back during WWI named Thomas.
Oskar finds a key that belonged to his father in an envelope with the name Black written on it. So, he sets out on a journey throughout New York City to find out where the key came from and what it means to his father.
Thomas in a young boy in a Eastern European country during WWI. he falls in love with this you girl, but she is killed during an attack. He moves to America and there he loses his ability to speak, and meets his love's sister. They get married, but are both unhappy. He leaves her when she is pregnant. The rest of his story bounces back and forth between before and after the attack."
