Plot Summary of The Hogs of Cold Harbor: The Civil War Saga of Private Johnny Hess
""The Hogs of Cold Harbor" is based on the actual war diary of Private John Henry Hess, Co. G, 29th VA Infantry Regiment, Longstreet's Corps, Pickett's Division, 1863-1864.
    Pvt. Hess fought in 13 vicious major battles in four campaigns. But the most horrible experience Hess faced was the knowledge that "armies of the night" in the form of wild hogs (in the hundreds) followed both Southern and Northern armies waiting for battles. The hogs were smart -- smart enough to stay out of rifle range during encampments and battles. But also smart enough to invade battlefields at night to eat the wounded and dead, knowing instinctively that no fire would fall upon them because the flares of rifle barrels would bring instant sharpshooter response."
