| Plot Summary of Smothering |
"Claire is dismayed when she awakens to find an unexpected guest on her doorstep. It's her mother, the same woman who constantly nitpicks and critizes her every move. And she's got an open ended flight reservation so she won't admit how long she's staying. When Claire calls dad to find out he just vaguely hints that mom wanted a chance to get to know her better. As if her first twenty three year chance went so well.
As if that's not bad enough, Claire is having some major up's and down's at work. Her boss one minute acts as if he is hitting upon her and the next is completely rude and belittling. To say nothing of how her coworkers go from friendly to icy in nothing flat.
And while she spends the first half of the book completely obsessed with her co worker will he be the key to her future love happiness? Beginning with mom's visit, Claire will face several family issues. Her relationship with her mother will never be the same after this visit. She will also have to deal with how she views and treats her father and sibling, sister.
While confronting these facets of life, she will also be going through personal turmoil on a path to self discovery. Seeing her parents in a new way may shed some light on her own problems.
