"The romances of three men named George is told in this book. The Georges were childhood friends and all fought in the Napoleonic wars. George, Lord Vandeiman, known as Van, is depressed, broke and thinks he has nothing left to live for, therefore, thinks he has nothing left to lose when Maria Celestin asks him to pose as her fiance. The older woman is a widow beset with fortune hunters after her money and her beauty. Van agrees never suspecting that they might find love and he might find a reason to live.
George Connaught Somerford, earl of Wyvern, is known as Con. Con and Susan Kerslake had two brief romantic weeks as teenagers 11 years ago. But when Con meets her again, it is at gunpoint because she is involved in smuggling while he, as lord, must uphold the law. They are disconcerted to realize that the old attraction is still there. They give into the physical attraction between them and become lovers. But Con has plans to marry an aristocratic young woman and Susan activities smuggling makes her an impossible choice for a bride.
George Hawkinville, known as Hawk returns from Waterloo to find his father ill. There is almost no money because his father had been trying to buy the title of Lord Deveril. And there are costs to repair the village. Hawk must marry for money. The best choice is the heiress to the Deveril estates, which his father has always wanted. The heiress is Clarissa Greystone. Hawk surprises himself by falling in love with Clarissa. But Clarissa and her friends are suspicious of the obvious fortune hunter Hawk. Moreover, there is the question of the mysterious death of Lord Deveril, who was Clarissa's fiance. Clarissa's powerful friends know something they are not telling Hawk."
