Because of the tension imposed to him by his teacher who he has a nervous breakdown and he leaves Vienna out of a sudden. After a few months, when he is begging to recover, he realizes how much he misses Julia and tries to get in touch with her again but he receives no answer.
Ten years later, he meets her again in London at the concert he gave with his quartet. He feels that he still loves her but now Julia is married, has a child and suffers from a terrible disease which gradually makes her go deaf. She still plays the piano and accepts a tour with Michael's quartet in Vienna and Venice as a last chance for her career that is approaching to an end because of the disease. During the tour, they both realize that they cannot stay away one from each other and that the love is as strong as ever. But there are so many obstacles between them?
