Twelve years later Rink returns to town when notified that his father is dying. The problem is that in the ensuing years his father Roscoe had secretly paid for Caroline to go to college, found her a job back in town and then convinced her to marry him. What Caroline wanted most was respectibility and she thought that by marrying Roscoe she would get that. Rink is torn apart by the fact that the girl he loved and still loved had married his father. Roscoe admitted on his death bed that he had only married Caroline to get back at Rink and that he knew Rink would never be able to touch Caroline again because of that.
