In 1815 Reverend Toogood worries that he does not have enough money to provide dowries for his five daughters. To insure he does, he knows he must marry off the first one to a wealthy aristocrat, which will help the remaining foursome. He selects his second oldest child, Fleur, as the best bet since she is the prettiest of his offspring.
Fleur detest her father's plan and is appalled to learn that her mother's friend the Duchess of Granville will sponsor her. She wants to marry for love not money so she will meet her sire's commitment of seeking a wealthy suitor, but refuses to wed for anything that excludes a deep love between her and her spouse. The Duchess drafts her son Dominic Elliot to escort the mouthy opinionated rustic. He wants her gone as she interferes with his efforts to uncover the identity of who is abducting rich women while she tries to learn what his great secret is even as they fall in love with one another.

" Fleur Toogood is the daughter of a poor country parson who has been invited to have a season in London sponsored by the Dowager Marchioness of Granville. Fleur really does not want a season, but feels she owes it to her family to find a advantagous marriage so the rest of her sister have an opportunity to find husbands.
Lord Dominic Elliot is a man with a mission to find a kidnapper who ransoming wealthy daughters of the ton. He uses the disguise of Brother Juste to secretly speak to victims. Dominic is very busy running an estate for his brother and searching for a criminal, so when his mother ask him to escort Fleur around for the season, Dominic is annoyed.
When Dominic and Fleur meet, they have an instant connection, just as his mother secretly hoped, but Dominic fights against commitment, prefering the life of a bachelor. As the season progresses, he finds he does not any man around Fleur but him, and as he closes in on the kidnapper, he decides he truly does want to marry Fleur. As they decide to commit themselves, the kidnapper strikes out against Fleur and only Dominic has the knowledge to save the woman he loves."
